In Japan’s maritime and trading sectors, there’s a swiftly growing focus on ammonia as a next-generation fuel. Maritime stakeholders remark, “We do not choose ammonia exclusively. Methanol and hydrogen are also vital as fuels. Nonetheless, ammonia is certainly a strong candidate for achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions.”
Amogy, headquartered in New York with Seonghoon Woo as CEO, is on a mission to unlock the potential of ammonia as a clean energy source. The company is working to accelerate the global transition to net zero and support future generations. Founded in 2020 by four Ph.D. graduates from MIT, the company aims to enable decarbonization in sectors where reductions are challenging, such as maritime transport, power generation, and heavy-duty transportation.
On April 3, 2024, Amogy announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Itochu Corporation. This strategic partnership aims to explore the application of Amogy’s technology on Itochu Corporation’s vessels. Specifically, the two parties will work closely to identify suitable ships and provide information on retrofitting existing vessels or designing new ones. This partnership could also extend to other projects within the broader ammonia and hydrogen value chain, including initiatives such as ammonia bunkering projects, advisory services, facility use, and cooperation in ammonia supply.
Additionally, in March 2023, Amogy signed a memorandum of understanding with Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) (Takeshi Hashimoto, President & CEO) and MOL PLUS (Takuya Sakamoto, Representative person) to explore the maritime application of Amogy’s ammonia power generation systems and the construction of an ammonia supply chain. With this memorandum, MOL PLUS has decided to invest in Amogy.

日本の海運業界、商社の間で次世代燃料としてアンモニアへの注目が急速に高まっている。海運関係者は次のように指摘する。「我々はアンモニアだけを選択しない。メタノール、水素も燃料として重要だ。しかし、温室効果ガスのネットゼロに向けアンモニアが有力であることは確かだ」

２０２４年４月３日、Amogyは伊藤忠商事との間で覚書を締結したことを発表した。この戦略的パートナーシップは、アモジーの技術を伊藤忠商事の船舶に応用する可能性を探ることを目的としている。
具体的には両者は密接に協力し、適切な船舶を特定し、既存の船舶の改造や新しい船舶の設計に関する情報を提供する。このパートナーシップは、アンモニアバンカリングプロジェクト、アドバイザリーサービス、設備利用、アンモニア供給における協力などのイニシアチブを含む、より広範なアンモニアと水素のバリューチェーンにおける他のプロジェクトにも拡大する可能性がある。
Amogyはまた、2023年3月は株式会社商船三井（Takeshi Hashimoto President &CEO）,株式会社MOL PLUS（Takuyta Sakamoto,Representantiveは、AMOGYが開発するアンモニア発電システムの船舶利用やアンモニアのサプライチェーン構築に向けた覚書を3社間で締結している。本覚書の締結に合わせ、MOL PLUSはAMOGYへの出資を決定済みである。
