〆BIMCO Hosts Panel Session at Posidonia 2024 on Maritime Sustainability

On 5th June 2024, the Baltic and International Maritime Council (BIMCO) hosted a panel session at the Posidonia Maritime Exhibition 2024. The session, moderated by Stinne Taiger Ivø, BIMCO’s Deputy Secretary General, featured in-depth discussions on various regulations, including the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII), the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU-ETS), and FuelEU Maritime.

The panel delved into expert insights on these topics, while also considering data sharing and operational energy efficiency. With the implementation of FuelEU Maritime approaching in 2025, the event’s host, Nikolaus H. Schües, President and Chairperson of the Board at BIMCO, aptly themed the panel “The Future of maritime sustainability.”

The panel also included discussions on data sharing and operational energy efficiency, with notable contributions from panelists including Natalie Wong, Project Manager, Contracts & Clauses, BIMCO; Carl Lindahl, Project Manager, Contracts & Clauses, BIMCO; Charis Plakantonaki, Chief Strategy Officer, Star Bulk; Eleni Antoniadou, Lawyer, Gard; and Giannis Webster, Legal Counsel, Costamare Shipping Company.

One speaker elaborated on their company’s approach to fleet decarbonization:
“Currently, many new ships are being ordered with traditional fuels, which are far more energy-efficient than any other fuel at this time. Some shipowners are disposing of older, inefficient vessels and purchasing more environmentally friendly ships second-hand to renew their fleets. Several shipowners are highly proactive in this area. Gradually updating the fleet is a key focus of our decarbonization strategy.”

On the other hand, another speaker analyzed the current situation, saying, “From what I’ve heard from the Tokyo office in particular, many Japanese shipowners seem to see environmental regulations as an opportunity. In fact, these regulations will likely bring significant income to Japanese shipowners. However, some shipowners are taking a wait-and-see approach to understand what the best technology is. Some are experimenting with methanol, batteries, and other energy efficiency technologies.”

There was also a discussion on data sharing.

As FuelEU Maritime is set to be introduced next year, how the industry will gather information and move towards decarbonization will likely become a key issue in the future.
