A press conference for the “Future City” pavilion, in which Mitsui O.S.K. Lines will participate at the 2025 Japan World Expo (EXPO 2025 OSAKA, KANSAI, JAPAN), was held on July 17, 2024, in Osaka. The event attracted numerous media representatives. Space producer and project creative director of “Future City,” Shuichi Furumi, expressed his aspirations, stating, “Future City is supported by 12 companies and will feature 15 attractions. We aim to make it an experience where visitors will undoubtedly feel it was worth coming.”
The Osaka-Kansai Expo will be held for 184 days from April 13 to October 13, 2025, in the Yumeshima area of Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture.
MOL will participate as a bronze partner in the “City of the Future” exhibit. Their individual display will align with the theme of “Transportation and Mobility,” which emphasizes the creation of new values such as environmental considerations in the movement of people and goods, beyond mere transportation.
Hiroki Mori from the MOL Corporate Communications Department also attended the press conference that day.
“City of the Future” will be a joint exhibit by the Expo Association and 12 companies and organizations. The specific details of each company’s exhibit will be announced at the second press conference scheduled for the end of August 2024. MOL plans to center its display around the next-generation sailing ship, “Wind Challenger.”
The Wind Challenger uses sails to harness wind power, a renewable energy source, for propulsion. While current large commercial ships rely almost entirely on fossil fuels for propulsion, the installation of sails allows for the direct use of wind power as an additional propulsive force. The Wind Challenger aims to significantly reduce fuel consumption and GHG emissions of large cargo ships by integrating the latest technologies with traditional sailing ship techniques, making it the most advanced initiative by MOL.

〆商船三井が参加する大阪・関西万博（EXPO 2025 OSAKA, KANSAI, JAPAN）「未来の都市」（Future City）の記者会見が行われた。
2025年日本国際博覧会（Short for大阪・関西万博、EXPO 2025 OSAKA, KANSAI, JAPAN）で商船三井が参加するパビリオン「未来の都市」(Future City)
の記者会見が２０２４年７月１７日、大阪市で開催された。当日は多くの報道関係者が参集。空間プロデューサーで、「未来の都市」のプロジェクト・クリエイティブディレクターを務める古見修一（Furumi Syuichi）が「未来の都市は、１２社が協賛し１５のアトラクションを予定している。（来場した方々が）来て絶対良かったというものにした」と抱負を語った。
大阪・関西万博は２０２５年４月１３日―１０月１３日まで１８４日間、大阪府大阪市夢洲地区（Osaka Pre, Osaka city Yumeshima area）で開催される。
商船三井は「未来の都市」にブロンズパートナーとして参加する。「交通・モビリティ」のテーマの「人やモノが単に移動するだけでなく、移動シーンに環境後年などの新たな価値が生まれ、重なり合っていく」に沿った個社展示を行う。
当日の会見には商船三井コーポレートコミュニケーション部の森裕紀（Hiroki Mori）も参加した。
「未来の都市」は博覧会協会と１２社の企業、団体での共同出展となる。各社の具体的な出展内容は２０２４年８月末に予定されている第２回目の記者会見で発表される予定。商船三井は次世代帆船「ウインドチャレンジャー、WIND CHALLENGER」を中心に展示物を構成する見通し。
ウインドチャレンジャーは、帆を利用し、再生可能エネルギーである風力を船の推進力に活用する。現在の大型商船は、進力のほぼすべてを化石燃料に頼っているが、帆の設置により、風力を直接推進力としてプラスすることが可能になる。ウインドチャンジャ―はかつての帆船の技術を、現代の最新技術により最大進化させ有効活用することで、大型貨物船の燃料消費を抑え、GHG排出量を大幅に削減を目指す商船三井が取り組み最新技術である。
