〆Monjasa Acquires Two Tankers to Meet West African Bunker Demand

Monjasa, a global oil and shipping group headquartered in Fredericia, Denmark, has announced the acquisition of two tankers: the Monjasa Rover (17,200 DWT) and the Monjasa Hunter (7,858 DWT). The Monjasa Hunter will augment the company’s specialized fleet for offshore oil and gas vessels, particularly FPSOs, in West Africa.

This acquisition responds to the increased demand for ship fuel in West Africa, which has risen in comparison to 2023. The surge is due to cargo ships taking longer routes around the Cape of Good Hope to avoid attacks by Houthis in the Red Sea.

With these two additions, Monjasa’s owned tonnage now surpasses its chartered tonnage for the first time since the company’s founding in 2002. The Monjasa fleet currently comprises 16 owned vessels and 15 time-chartered vessels.

Specialized Supply for Offshore Oil and Gas Sector

The Monjasa Rover will replace the Monjasa Thunder (19,991 DWT), recently relocated from West Africa to the Panama Canal. Meanwhile, the Monjasa Hunter brings new specialized capabilities to Monjasa’s fleet.

Most notably, the Monjasa Hunter, with an overall length of less than 110 meters, can berth alongside oil rigs and platforms, providing flexibility to offshore oil and gas operators from the Gulf of Guinea to Namibia.

Group Shipping Director, Torben Maigaard Nielsen, commented:
“Unlike other tankers in West Africa, which are too large for this purpose, the Monjasa Hunter offers a distinct advantage to offshore operators in the region. Her overall length of 101 meters and relatively large cargo capacity for her size enable her to support fuel operations with length restrictions, including FPSOs.”

Delivery and Drydocking in Riga and Istanbul

Monjasa received the Monjasa Rover (formerly Freja Nord) and the Monjasa Hunter (formerly Anneliese Theresa) in Riga, Latvia, and Istanbul, Turkey, respectively.

Both tankers underwent renewal surveys, renaming, and hull blasting and painting to match the Monjasa fleet design during their drydocking.

Overall, Monjasa’s operations in West Africa consist of about 10 tankers. The Middle East and Africa region accounted for 28% of the 6.5 million tons of marine fuel supplied in 2023.
