Copenhagen-based Danish shipping giant MAERSK has reported a fire on the deck of one of its container ships, the MAERSK FRANKFURT, according to the Indian Coast Guard.
On 19th July 2024, a container caught fire on the deck of the MAERSK FRANKFURT, a vessel operated by Denmark’s leading maritime company, MAERSK, headquartered in Copenhagen. The ship, owned by a Japanese shipping owner, was anchored approximately 12 kilometers south of Karwar on India’s west coast. As of 21st July 2024, three days after the fire began, firefighting efforts were still ongoing. MAERSK confirmed the death of one crew member on the same day.
The MAERSK FRANKFURT (IMO number 9969065, registered in Panama) is a 5800 TEU container ship completed by Imabari Shipbuilding in May 2024. The vessel was on its maiden voyage from Japan and was en route from Mundra, India, to Colombo, Sri Lanka, at the time of the incident, according to MAERSK.
The Panama Maritime Authority (PMA) reported that the ship experienced an explosion while navigating the Arabian Sea near the Indian coast, resulting in the death of one crew member. Crew reports indicate that the body is located on the lashing bridge but remains unreachable due to the flames. The PMA stated, “Indian authorities are fully engaged in firefighting efforts, ensuring the safety of the ship and its crew.”
Reuters has reported that the fire and subsequent explosion were caused by an electrical short circuit, resulting in the death of a Filipino crew member. The ship had 21 crew members on board, who are now reported to be in stable condition.
