A general cargo ship with a diesel-electric propulsion system, ordered by Dutch shipowner and operator Vertom Group from Thecla Bodewes Shipyards (headquartered in Rotterdam, Netherlands), has been launched. Thecla Bodewes Shipyards announced the launch on LinkedIn on July 25, 2024. The newly launched ship is a 7000 DWT type, known in Asia as a Greater Coasting Service Vessel (Kinkai-sen in Japanese, general cargo ship), used for transporting export steel materials and PKS (Palm Kernel Shells). In the Netherlands, this type of ship is noted for its distinctive appearance and environmentally friendly diesel-electric propulsion system.
On July 25, 2024, Thecla Bodewes Shipyards of the Netherlands announced on LinkedIn the launch of VERTOM LISA, the sixth vessel in their LABRAX series, a general cargo ship with a deadweight tonnage of 7,281 DWT.
Equipped with a diesel-electric propulsion system, this vessel not only boasts superior navigational characteristics but also allows the owner and operator, the Vertom Group, to offer customized transport solutions to their clients. By significantly reducing CO2 emissions, all vessels in the LABRAX series contribute to a greener world.
The LABRAX series, measuring 118 meters in length, 14.30 meters in width, and 6.20 meters in draft, was specifically developed to provide customized transport solutions in response to Vertom’s requirements. The propulsion system of the LABRAX series enables these ships to achieve an Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) that is well below the standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). This modular propulsion concept is designed to adapt to future developments by enabling the use of methanol-electric or hydrogen-electric propulsion, further reducing carbon emissions. The first ship in the series, VERTOM PATTY, was launched in September 2022.
Thecla Bodewes Shipyards is a seventh-generation family-owned business in the Netherlands with over 300 years of shipbuilding experience. The company’s focus is on providing forward-looking green ships using innovative sustainable solutions aimed at reducing pollution and achieving zero emissions. With experience in building over 100 cargo ships, 18 diesel-electric and LNG-electric vessels, and 15 years of expertise in diesel-electric propulsion systems, the shipyard has demonstrated its ability to deliver ships of the highest standards on time for environmentally conscious customers.
Vertom was established in 1974, originally located in the Port of Rotterdam area, employing 20 people, and owning three ships. The company expanded in 1981, opening various offices in Belgium. By the mid-1980s, the first steps were taken towards establishing a regular liner service to the Caribbean.
Over the years, the company has continued to grow. In 1999, Vertom Shipping UK Ltd. commenced operations and opened its first port office. In 2010, a merger with Unity Beheer (UCS) B.V. led to an increase in employees and activities. A few years ago, the company found an ideal site in Rhoon, Netherlands, which now serves as their office. The name Vertom is derived from their first ship, MV Vera Tomson.
The company currently operates 94 vessels.
