In early August, JP Morgan Asset Management acquired Bold Ocean, a US-based shipping and logistics company, from private equity firm Nova Infrastructure for an undisclosed amount. The United States, while not a dominant player in the global shipping market, could see more acquisitions of US shipping companies by investors, particularly as domestic maritime logistics and energy exports from the US gain importance.

Bold Ocean operates a fleet of nine vessels, leased long-term to the US government for the transport of fuel, humanitarian food aid, and other supplies, in compliance with the Jones Act. Based in Annapolis, Maryland, the company plays a crucial role in providing maritime services to the US government under long-term charters.
The Bold Ocean group includes US-flagged vessels, fleet technical management, and maritime personnel companies such as Schuyler Line Navigation Company, Schuyler Services, Schuyler Technical, Chesapeake Crewing, and Argent Marine Operations. The company has expressed its intent to pursue growth opportunities to expand its US-flagged fleet and logistics services, with chief executive, Dion Nicely expected to continue leading the company.
A JP Morgan representative commented, “We are confident that Bold Ocean will benefit from our global maritime platform, bringing scale and growth opportunities at a time when the US-flagged shipping market is expected to continue evolving and expanding.”
