〆NYK Line Reaches Basic Agreement with Kyushu Electric Power, Sojitz, and Sembcorp Industries on Green Ammonia Maritime Transport Between India and Japan

NYK Line announced on the 21st of August 2024 that it has reached a basic agreement to collaborate on the maritime transport of green ammonia between India and Japan with Kyushu Electric Power, Sojitz Corporation, and Sembcorp Green Hydrogen, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Singapore-based Sembcorp Industries. The plan is to transport approximately 200,000 tons of green ammonia annually to Kyushu.

Green ammonia refers to ammonia produced using green hydrogen—hydrogen generated through renewable energy sources without emitting CO2. Specifically, this involves the electrolysis of water using electricity from renewable sources such as solar and wind power to produce hydrogen, which is then synthesized with nitrogen to create ammonia.

Kyushu Electric Power and Sojitz, in partnership with Sembcorp Green Hydrogen, are advancing a project in India to produce green ammonia for the Japanese market. India, with its abundant renewable energy resources, is expected to be a competitive producer of green ammonia. The project aims to begin supplying green ammonia produced in India to consumers in Japan, particularly in the Kyushu region, by June 2024.

Many of the green ammonia production facilities are projected to produce around 1 million tons annually by 2030, with large-scale projects targeting up to 20 million tons per year. Japan’s recent ammonia demand has hovered around 1 million tons annually. The combined total of future green ammonia production plans is expected to reach approximately 56 million tons per year, accounting for nearly 40% of the global demand, which stands at around 150 million tons.
