October 15-17: 200 Global Maritime Leaders Convene to Discuss “Decarbonization” and “Sustainable Workforce Development”
The Global Maritime Forum (GMF), an international non-profit organization headquartered in Denmark, will hold its annual summit in Tokyo from October 15 to 17, 2024. The event is expected to gather approximately 200 leaders from across the global maritime value chain. This year, the GMF has identified “Decarbonization of Shipping” and “Sustainable Workforce Development” as the critical issues that the industry must address collectively to shape the future of maritime trade.

This will be the first time the GMF Annual Summit is held in Japan and the third time in Asia, following previous summits in Hong Kong and Singapore. Notable attendees include Arsenio Dominguez, the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Jan Dieleman, President of Cargill Ocean Transportation and Chairman of the GMF, and Toshiaki Tanaka, Executive Vice President of Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and a member of the GMF Advisory Board.
Established in 2017, the GMF brings together leaders and experts from the maritime industry to foster collaboration and joint actions aimed at sustainable economic development and the enhancement of human well-being. The annual summit, held every year since 2018, has played a crucial role in the creation of international frameworks for the maritime sector.
Key initiatives established by the GMF include the “Getting to Zero Coalition,” a group of over 200 companies and organizations committed to commercializing zero-emission vessels by 2030, as well as the “All Aboard Alliance,” which aims to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in the shipping industry. The GMF has also been instrumental in launching the “Poseidon Principles,” a framework that supports the decarbonization of international shipping through financial incentives.
The 2024 summit will serve as a platform for industry leaders to strengthen their commitment to a sustainable maritime future and promote greater collaboration on critical global challenges.
