Tokyo: StormGeo, a Norway-based company providing voyage optimization solutions using meteorological data, held a seminar titled “The Path to Decarbonization in Shipping” in Tokyo on November 26. Espen Martinsen, Executive Vice President of Sales, highlighted the company’s recent data collaboration with ClassNK (Nippon Kaiji Kyokai), initiated this spring. He stated, “We aim to support voyage optimization and compliance with environmental regulations. Digital solutions are transforming the shipping industry, and providing accurate and reliable data is our mission.”
The seminar was attended by stakeholders, including shipowners, operators, and ship management companies.
StormGeo, a group company of Alfa Laval, a leading heat exchanger manufacturer, offers performance management services for over 4,300 vessels globally. As part of its initiatives to address environmental regulations, the company also provides greenhouse gas (GHG) emission management services.
During the seminar, Hiroki Urano from ClassNK’s Green Certification Department (DCS Section) explained the latest environmental regulations, such as the “FuelEU Maritime,” set to take effect in January 2025. Tools supporting GHG management for shipping companies, including “ClassNK Portal” and “ClassNK ZETA,” were also introduced.
Michael Qiao, Market Development Manager for Fleet Performance Management at StormGeo, provided a detailed explanation of strategies to comply with “FuelEU Maritime.” Additionally, Yohei Mozumi, Captain and member of NYK Line’s Decarbonization Promotion Team, reported on the progress of decarbonization initiatives.
The seminar concluded with a panel discussion on promoting decarbonization. Panelists included representatives from StormGeo, ClassNK, NYK Line, and Tobias Rasen Borgenhov from Wallenius Wilhelmsen. Hirofumi Yamamoto, Senior Executive Officer of Japan Maritime Daily, served as the moderator.
