〆Norden Partners with US-Based Meta on Decarbonization Efforts Utilizing Biofuels through “Book & Claim” Method

On November 26, 2024, Danish tramp shipping giant Norden (NORDEN) announced its collaboration with US-based Meta (formerly Facebook) to provide greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction services utilizing sustainable marine fuels. Through the “Book & Claim” method, Norden will allocate the GHG reduction benefits achieved by using biofuels on its operated vessels to Meta. This partnership between a Danish shipping company and a US tech firm represents a highly unique and noteworthy example of collaboration in the field of decarbonization.

“We are proud to add Meta to the list of customers seeking a decarbonized maritime supply chain,” said Anne Jensen, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Norden. “Norden and Meta share high standards and are committed to further advancing the decarbonization of shipping cargo through our involvement on the governing board of the ‘Book & Claim Community,’” Jensen continued.

The GHG reduction solution offered by Norden is based on the “Book & Claim” method. Under this framework, biofuels used by Norden-operated vessels provide GHG reduction benefits, which are then allocated to a third party, in this case, Meta.

Norden facilitates the transfer of environmental attributes (emission reductions) from the biofuels it uses to shippers with transparency and reliability, adhering to the “Voluntary Market-Based Measurement Framework for Logistics Emissions Accounting and Reporting” developed by the Smart Freight Centre. The biofuels utilized are ISCC-certified, capable of reducing emissions by 80–90% over their lifecycle, and are compatible with existing vessels. The reduction credits are independently certified by Normec Verifavia and traded on an external registry managed by 123Carbon.

“Our ‘Book & Claim’ solution enables shipping customers to benefit from emissions reductions even when biofuels cannot be directly bunkered on specific trade routes or voyages,” Jensen added.

This solution is designed to enable not only Norden’s direct customers but also clients in other industries aiming to decarbonize their supply chains through maritime transport to make credible decarbonization investments.

“At Meta, we are committed to achieving net zero emissions across our value chain by 2030. To meet this goal, we are working to reduce emissions across our supply chain, including upstream emissions from maritime transport of goods such as computing equipment and construction materials,” explained Devon Lake, Head of Net Zero Strategy at Meta. “Innovative solutions like those offered by Norden are crucial for companies like Meta to decarbonize their value chains at the pace and scale required to meet their emissions reduction targets.”
