Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) announced on December 12, 2024, that it had awarded scholarships to a total of 82 students from Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) and Dalian Maritime University (DMU) in the People’s Republic of China. NYK has been implementing its scholarship program since the fiscal year 2001, and with this 24th round, the total number of maritime university students who have received scholarships from NYK has reached 1,611.

According to NYK, scholarships were awarded to 36 students at Shanghai Maritime University on November 27 and to 46 students at Dalian Maritime University on December 5. Speaking at the ceremonies held at both universities, Nobuki Kurosaka, NYK’s Chief Representative for China, said:
“The NYK Group operates under the corporate philosophy of ‘Bringing value to life.’ Even amid ongoing conflicts around the world, we continue to support vital shipping and logistics infrastructure indispensable to people’s lives. I hope you will expand your communication with the international community, acquire knowledge and skills in various fields such as maritime transport, logistics, and the environment, and grow into individuals who will contribute to society in the future.”
In recent years, China has become a central player in the global shipping market, driven by its overwhelming shipbuilding capacity and financial strength in the maritime sector. Graduates of Shanghai Maritime University and Dalian Maritime University are particularly active not only within China but also in Japan and other parts of the global shipping and shipbuilding markets as highly capable professionals. By awarding scholarships to students of these two maritime universities in China, NYK aims to support the development of maritime education.
Having personally interviewed many graduates of Shanghai Maritime University and Dalian Maritime University at Japanese ocean-going operators, coastal shipping operators, and Chinese shipyards, I have seen firsthand how they maintain a strong “senpai-kohai” (senior-junior) relationship even after graduation. In some cases, graduates of Dalian Maritime University run shipping companies and form contracts with their juniors from the same university to supply Chinese seafarers.
China is steadily becoming a leading force in the global maritime industry. Supporting China’s maritime universities is also expected to significantly benefit NYK by strengthening its relationship with the Chinese maritime industry.

日本郵船は2024年12月12日、中華人民共和国（中国）の上海海事大学（Shanghai Maritime University、SMU）と大連海事大学（Dalian Maritime University、DMU）の学生計82人に奨学金を授与したと発表した。日本郵船は2001年度以降、奨学金制度を実施しており、今回の24回目で日本郵船が奨学金を授与した海事大学の学生は合計1,611人となった。
日本郵船によると、上海海事大学では11月27日に36人、大連海事大学では12月5日に46人の学生に奨学金が授与された。日本郵船の中国総代表の黒坂宣紀（NYK’s chief representative for China, Nobuki Kurosaka）は両校の式典で、「日本郵船グループは『Bringing value to life.』を企業理念に掲げ、世界各地で紛争が相次ぐ状況下においても、人々の生活に欠かせない海運・物流インフラを支える企業として活動している。これから皆さんが国際社会とのコミュニケーションを広げ、海運、物流、環境など、さまざまな分野の知識や技術を習得し、将来の社会を担う人材へと成長されることを期待している」と述べた。
中国は近年、圧倒的な造船能力と船舶金融力で世界の海運市場の中心を占めている。特に上海海事大学と大連海事大学の卒業生は中国国内だけでなく、日本や世界の海運、造船市場で優秀な人材として活躍している。日本郵船は中国の2つの海事大学の学生に奨学金を授与することで、海事教育の発展を支援していく方針だ。
私は実際、日本の外航オペレーター、近海オペレーター、中国の造船所などで多くの上海海事大学、大連海事大学の卒業生を取材した経験を持つ。彼らは卒業後も『先輩・後輩』の関係性を維持しながら、大連海事大学を卒業した先輩が経営する海運会社に所属し、後輩の大連海事大学の卒業生が中国人船員を供給する契約を結んでいることもある。
中国は世界の海運業界の主人公になりつつあり、中国の海事大学を支援することは、日本郵船にとっても中国の海事産業と関係を深める上で大きく役立つと思われる。
