- Investigations into the “Eagle S” are ongoing, with particular focus on interrogating the crew and conducting forensic analyses. According to Finnish police, seven officers and crew members are under suspicion of criminal activity. Estonian officials have stated there is little doubt that both nations are facing deliberate attacks.
- The MR tanker “Jazz” (IMO 9337327), part of the Dark Fleet, drifted off the coast of Finland this past weekend due to engine trouble and is now anchored nearshore. TradeWinds has reported irregular movements by several Dark Fleet tankers in the waters between Finland and Estonia. Among these vessels are the Aframax tankers “Line” (IMO 9291250) and “Life” (IMO 9265756), both previously part of the Beks fleet, as was “Jazz.”
The Rising Use of Short Names in the Dark Fleet
Sæther has proposed several plausible reasons for the increasing prevalence of four-letter vessel names among Dark Fleet ships:

Current Trends in Dark Fleet Naming
The Dark Fleet now includes a growing number of tankers with short, nondescript names such as “Lexi,” “Levi,” “Yuri,” “Hedi,” and “Elva.” Images of the worn-out VLCC “Alma” provide an illustrative example.
Particular care must be taken to differentiate between sanctioned vessels like the VLCC “Yuri” (IMO 9235737, built in 2002) and another sanctioned VLCC, “Uri” (IMO 9248497, built in 2002). The minor difference of a single “Y” could easily result in confusion, potentially an intentional tactic. Sæther speculates that three-letter names may emerge next.
Regulatory and Legal Updates
Lloyd’s List has identified Gambia as the latest flag state for Dark Fleet vessels. The IMO’s Legal Committee is scheduled to discuss issues surrounding false flagging and fraudulent registrations at its April 2025 meeting.
