Sojitz Corporation has announced that it has signed a participation agreement in the “Kami Project,” an iron ore project underway in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The project aims to produce high-grade iron ore for direct reduction (DR) and significantly reduce CO₂ emissions through the use of electric furnace technology. Sojitz will advance the project alongside Champion Iron Limited (Champion), an iron ore production company, and Nippon Steel Corporation. The stake distribution in the project is Sojitz 19%, Champion 51%, and Nippon Steel 30%.

Path to Carbon Neutrality
The steel industry has set a target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, which necessitates a shift from the traditional blast furnace method to the use of recycled scrap steel in electric arc furnaces. Electric furnace technology is expected to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions, making high-quality iron ore and scrap steel essential for steel production in the future.
The Kami Project will produce high-grade iron ore to meet the growing demand for DR iron ore. Notably, the iron ore produced in this project boasts high iron content and low impurity levels, making it ideal for producing direct reduced iron through DR methods.
Project Outlook
The Kami Project is expected to play a vital role in the decarbonization of the steel industry. The iron ore produced will also contribute to the future transition to hydrogen-based blast furnaces.
Sojitz has experience in supplying iron ore from the Bloom Lake mine in Quebec, owned by Champion, to the Japanese market. In the Kami Project, Sojitz will be responsible for supplying DR iron ore. The company has secured off-take rights and will support sales to specific consumers.

双日株式会社は、カナダ・ニューファンドランド・ラブラドール州で進行中の鉄鉱石プロジェクト「カミプロジェクト」への参画契約を締結した。このプロジェクトは、直接還元（DR）用の高品位鉄鉱石を生産し、電炉法を用いることでCO₂排出の大幅な削減を目指すもので、同社は鉄鉱石生産企業のチャンピオン・アイアン・リミテッド（以下、チャンピオン）および日本製鉄株式会社と共に事業を推進する。参画持分は双日19%、チャンピオン51%、日本製鉄30%。
カーボンニュートラルへの道
鉄鋼業界は、2050年までにカーボンニュートラルを達成する目標を掲げており、そのためには、従来の高炉法から、鉄スクラップを用いたリサイクル型電炉法への移行が求められている。電炉法はCO₂排出量を大幅に削減できるとされ、今後、鉄鋼製造においては高品質な鉄鉱石や鉄スクラップが不可欠となる。
カミプロジェクトでは、高品位な鉄鉱石が生産され、その供給がDR用鉄鉱石の需要に対応する。特に、このプロジェクトで生産される鉄鉱石は、高い鉄含有量と低い不純物レベルを誇り、DR法による還元鉄生産に最適とされている。
プロジェクトの展望

双日は、これまでチャンピオンが所有するケベック州のブルームレイク鉱山から日本市場への鉄鉱石供給経験を有し、カミプロジェクトにおいてもDR用鉄鉱石の供給を担うこととなる。また、同社はオフテイク権を確保し、特定の消費者への販売支援を行う予定だ。
