The container ship “GROTON” (built in 2002, 2490 TEU) operated by CMA CGM was attacked by missiles while navigating the Gulf of Aden on August 3, 2024, local time. According to the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), the ship was hit by missiles, but no fires, flooding, or oil spills occurred as a result of the attack, and no human casualties have been reported.
On August 4, 2024, a spokesperson for the Yemeni armed group Houthi revealed on X (formerly Twitter) that they had attacked the ship. The ship is registered in Liberia, and the owner is Greek shipowner Conbulk Shipmanagement.
According to CMA CGM’s website, the ship is part of the “BIGEX2 (India Gulf Red Sea Express)” service connecting various ports in India with Colombo, Jebel Ali, and Djibouti. Last month, another ship on the same service, “LOBIVIA” (built in 2001, 2082 TEU), was also attacked by missiles while navigating the Gulf of Aden.
