A study session organized by the “Kiboho no Kai,” a group primarily composed of shipowners from the Kure region in Hiroshima Prefecture, was held on October 25, 2024, at the Clayton Bay Hotel in Kure. Representing the organizers, Hiroyuki Funada, President of Kiboho no Kai and Funada Kaiun, gave the opening remarks:
“We have nurtured dreams of international shipping since establishing this association over 30 years ago, and I am sincerely grateful for the large turnout today.”
The event gathered more than 400 attendees, including members of Kiboho no Kai, shipowners from across Japan, financial institutions, shipyards, marine equipment manufacturers, and trading companies.

In his speech, Funada also introduced the upcoming interactive maritime event, “Kure Maritime Expo (Umihaku) 2024,” scheduled for November 10, 2024, in Kure. He encouraged participation, saying, “If your schedule permits, please join us.”
The event will feature exhibits on advanced maritime technologies at the Yamato Museum, a trial cruise on the world’s first hydrogen passenger vessel, “Hydro Bingo,” a guided tour of the Japan Marine United (JMU) shipyard in Kure, and an open campus at the Japan Coast Guard Academy.
During the first part of the study session, Masao Yamasaki, Manager at the Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) Green Transformation Center, delivered a lecture titled “The Latest Trends in GHG Emission Reductions in International Shipping.” His presentation covered the European Union’s Emissions Trading System (EU-ETS), the FuelEU Maritime regulation, and the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) medium-term strategies.
In the evening, a networking reception was held, during which Yoshiake Shinhara, Mayor of Kure, offered his congratulations:
“Since taking office as Mayor of Kure, I believe no event has been as grand as this ‘Kiboho no Kai’ gathering. I hope you will continue to support our city as we strive to become a leading maritime hub.”
