Norden has entered into lease agreements for one new Capesize bulk carrier and one new Handysize bulk carrier. Both vessels will be constructed at Japanese shipyards and are scheduled for delivery in 2028. Norden will hold purchase options (PO) for both vessels.
On December 3, 2024, Danish tramp shipping giant Norden announced that it had signed lease agreements for one new Capesize bulk carrier and one new Handysize bulk carrier, both to be built at Japanese shipyards and delivered in 2028. The company holds purchase options (PO), granting it the right to purchase the vessels.
Henrik Lykkegaard Madsen, Head of Asset Management, commented:
“By leasing newbuildings, we position ourselves advantageously against the backdrop of an ageing global fleet and the lowest orderbook in decades. With tight shipyard availability anticipated in the coming years, newbuilding prices and forward charter rates in the dry cargo sector are expected to remain robust.”
Regarding the dry cargo market outlook, he stated, “With tight shipyard supply expected in the coming years, newbuilding prices and forward charter rates are likely to remain strong.”
Norden has also decided to sell two of its existing Capesize vessels, both built in 2012 at Hanjin Subic Shipyard. The vessels will be delivered to buyers in the first quarter of 2025. Norden described the sales as a “strategic divestment aimed at maximizing returns during a period of high second-hand Capesize prices.”
Additionally, Norden announced the exercise of purchase options for five vessels: one Handysize bulk carrier and four Medium Range (MR) product tankers. The company stated that the exercise prices are “below current market asset values, demonstrating the enhanced value and agility of our business model.”
Following these transactions, Norden’s core fleet will consist of 17 owned vessels and 79 long-term chartered vessels with purchase options. Of these, 43 purchase options can be exercised by the end of next year.
