NYK-FIL Maritime E-Training, Inc. (NETI), a subsidiary of the NYK Group, is actively selling the training programs conducted within the NYK Group to external shipowners and ship management companies.

NETI, based in the Philippines, operates a training facility for seafarers and has initiated new training and education programs to cater to the decarbonization of maritime operations and the electrification of ships, focusing on new fuel adaptation and the cultivation of electrical engineers.

While primarily serving the crew members serving on vessels managed by the NYK Group, NETI is also actively meeting the training needs of external shipowners and ship management companies.

Among the training programs offered by NETI, those garnering significant interest from external shipowners and ship management companies are the IGF Code (International Code of Safety for Ships Using Gases or Other Low-flashpoint Fuels) training and the courses for electrical engineers.

The IGF Code training supports the acquisition of qualifications required for crew members serving on vessels fueled by low-flashpoint liquefied gases, such as LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas). It comprises basic training, which includes practical fire-fighting drills, and advanced training that utilizes simulators.

In May 2021, NETI obtained certification from the Maritime Industry Authority of the Philippines (MARINA) for its IGF Code training. NETI has been committed to developing Filipino seafarers who will be responsible for the safe operation of LNG-fueled ships.

The demand for training electrical engineers is increasing against the backdrop of the proliferation of electronic control engines and electric propulsion technologies in ships.

NETI’s training programs also highlight remote monitoring services that prevent major accidents related to the engine plants of operating ships. These services are not only targeted at ships operated by the NYK Group but also at third-party operated ships chartered by shipowners.

NYK Line collects data acquired by various sensors on its operated vessels via ship-to-shore communication. NYK has established a system that allows for the monitoring of engine plant operations from land. Utilizing this system, a monitoring center for engine plants, the “Remote Diagnostic Center” (RDC), has been established at NETI.

At this monitoring center, the condition of the engine plant is checked using an anomaly detection program that utilizes AI (Artificial Intelligence). If the monitoring system detects an anomaly, maritime professionals with specialized knowledge evaluate the results.

NETI was established in 2000 as an independent entity from the training department of NYK-Fil Ship Management Inc., to enhance training quality. NYK-Fil Ship Management is a crewing company jointly invested in by NYK Line and its Filipino business partner, the Transnational Diversified Group (TDG).

NETI plans to introduce new training facilities in the future, including new simulators, high-voltage engine simulators, free-fall lifeboats, and training equipment for the latest reefer containers.

Eliseo Clemente, the General Manager of the training center, states, “Our mission is to conduct the high-standard training that NYK Line demands.” Noel Aguilar, Assistant General Manager, adds, “Our strength lies in being able to provide training that reflects the experiences and lessons learned by NYK Line.”
