Yanmar Holdings Co., Ltd. and Amogy Inc. (headquartered in Brooklyn, New York, CEO: Seonghoon Woo) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore the potential of a new marine engine that combines Amogy’s unique ammonia decomposition technology with Yanmar HD’s hydrogen internal combustion engine (H2ICE) development. The signing of this MoU aims to develop advanced solutions for decarbonizing the maritime sector.

Amogy is a startup company engaged in the development of ammonia power generation systems. On June 27, 2024, Amogy CEO Seonghoon Woo announced at a press conference in Tokyo that their system would be installed on an ammonia transport vessel being constructed by South Korean shipbuilding giant Hanwha Ocean. Hanwha Ocean will be the first customer following the commercialization of the system. Prior to this, in August 2024, Amogy plans to launch the world’s first ammonia-fueled demonstration tugboat.
Through the signing of this MoU, Yanmar HD, and Amogy will jointly evaluate the potential of using Amogy’s technology to supply low-cost hydrogen fuel for Yanmar’s H2ICE.
Amogy’s ammonia decomposition technology, which utilizes unique catalytic materials, features low reaction temperatures and high durability, enabling efficient hydrogen supply. The two companies will investigate the feasibility and consider product commercialization. Additionally, starting with this joint research, they will explore collaboration opportunities in marine fuel cell systems.
To date, Amogy has raised a total of $220 million in funding. Investors include Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund and Saudi Aramco’s investment arm, as well as Japanese companies such as Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Mitsubishi Corporation, Yanmar, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

ヤンマーホールディングス（Yanmar Holdings Co., Ltd.）とAmogy Inc.（本社：アメリカニューヨーク州ブルックリン、CEO：Seonghoon Woo）はAmogy独自のアンモニア分解技術とヤンマーHDで開発を進める水素内燃機関（H2ICE）の組み合わせによる新たな舶用エンジンの可能性を検討する覚書を締結しました。今回の覚書の締結は、両社が舶用分野における脱炭素化に向けた先進的なソリューションを開発することを目的としています。
Amogyはアンモニア発電システムの開発などを手掛けるスタートアップ企業である。
AmogyのSeonghoon Woo CEO（最高経営責任者）は２０２４年6月27日に東京都内で記者会見し、韓国造船大手ハンファオーシャンが建造するアンモニア輸送船に自社システムを搭載することが決まったと明らかにした。ハンファオーシャンがシステム商用化後初の顧客となる。これに先立ち２０２４年8月、Amogyは世界初のアンモニア燃料船となる実証用のアンモニア焚（だ）きタグボートの就航を予定する。
ヤンマーHDとAmogyは今回の覚書の締結により、両社は共同で、Amogyの技術を活用しヤンマーのH2ICE向けに低コストの水素燃料を供給する可能性について評価を実施していく。
Amogy社のアンモニア分解技術は、独自の触媒材料を利用することで低い反応温度と高耐久性を持ち、効率の良い水素供給を可能にする。両社で実現可能性を調査し、製品化を検討する。また、本共同研究を皮切りに、舶用燃料電池システムにおいても協業の可能性を模索していく。
アモジーはこれまでに総額2億2000万ドルの資金調達を実施。米アマゾン・ドット・コムの環境ファンドやサウジアラビアの国営石油会社サウジアラムコ傘下の投資会社などのほか、日系では商船三井、三菱商事、ヤンマー、三菱重工業などが出資している。
